They say the cave was once a mine.
They are lying.
Only footprints.
Thousands of them.
All facing inward.
Then my own voice answered from the dark.
“Come closer.”
I stepped inside.
The entrance vanished behind me.
Not closed.
Vanished.
The walls were breathing.
Slowly.
Deeply.
My name.
My name.
My name.
And the walls went silent.
I walked deeper.
The cave grew warmer.
Then colder.
Then warm again.
Stars floated inside it.
I reached toward one.
It screamed.
I pulled my hand away.
There were faces beneath the water.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Their mouths opened together.
They were all trying to warn me.
I could not hear them.
The cave was louder.
I found a doorway carved into the rock.
Behind it was a bedroom.
My bedroom.
The same bed.
The same window.
The same photograph on the wall.
Something was standing behind us.
I looked closer.
It had no face.
Then the photograph blinked.
I dropped it.
From somewhere behind me came a soft voice.
“Don't turn around.”
I froze.
The voice continued.
“It's closer when you look.”
Something breathed against my ear.
I turned.
Nothing.
My shadow.
Except I was standing still.
It was walking.
Slowly.
Toward me.
I backed away.
The shadow stopped.
Then it smiled.
I ran.
The cave changed around me.
I heard footsteps behind me.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then hundreds.
I ran faster.
The footsteps stopped.
I stopped too.
Silence.
Then,
I could feel it.
Another.
Closer.
I screamed.
The cave screamed with me.
The hills outside answered.
And suddenly I understood.
The cave was not beneath the hills.
The hills were beneath the cave.
The entire mountain was hollow.
Something had been sleeping inside it.
Something that had been dreaming of me.
The ground split open.
I fell.
Not downward.
Sideways.
And at the bottom,
there was a mouth.
Not a mouth in the stone.
A mouth beneath the stone.
It opened.
Then it spoke.
Not my name.
My voice.
It said:
“I remember you.”
I wanted to run.
But behind me stood the hills.
In front of me stood the mouth.
And between them,
stood me.
Another me.
Pale.
Wet.
Smiling.
He whispered,
“You took so long.”
Then the cave began to breathe.
The hills rose.
The moon went black.
He never speaks.
He never looks back.
Sometimes the cave whispers.
Sometimes it screams.
But sometimes,
very softly,
the cave breathes out my voice.
And says,
“Come home.”
