I will love you like that,
like the pillow
that remembers the shape
of your head
after you have left.
Like the bedroom door
that opens a little wider
when it hears your footsteps.
Like the little blue fish
sleeping inside a teacup
you have never touched,
quietly turning
in circles
as though it knows
how many times
I have missed you.
I will love you
without asking
why your shadow
sometimes stays beside me
after you have gone.
It stands near the bed.
It does not speak.
It only watches the door.
When you are tired,
I will lie beside you
and listen to your breathing.
Sometimes,
between one breath and the next,
I will hear another.
I will not tell you.
I will simply move closer
until there is no space
for anything else.
I will love you
like a key
that has been warm
from another person's hand
for a hundred years.
Like a photograph
that changes slightly
whenever you kiss me.
If your heart becomes
a strange house,
I will enter carefully.
I will learn which floorboards
remember your childhood.
I will learn which window
you stare through
when you are afraid.
And if one night
a new room appears
between our bedroom
and the kitchen,
I will not open it alone.
I will wait for you.
If there is an ocean
behind the door,
we will discover it together.
If something beneath the water
whispers your name,
I will hold your hand
until it stops.
I will love you
on the mornings
when your smile is missing.
When you look into the mirror
and find your reflection
standing too far away.
I will stand behind you.
I will place my hand
over yours.
And if the reflection
does not copy us,
I will still say,
“It's you.”
Because I know your hands.
I know the small scar
you sometimes forget.
I know the way
you turn your face
when you are trying not to cry.
I know the silence
you make
when you want to be held.
I will love those things
most.
Some nights,
the house may become quiet
in the wrong way.
The photographs
may turn themselves
toward the wall.
Your shoes
may appear beside the bed
even when you are wearing them.
The clock may stop
at the exact moment
you say my name.
Let it.
I will keep my arms
around you.
There are worse things
than a strange world.
Being alone in it
is one of them.
I will love you
when sleep takes you somewhere
I cannot follow.
If you disappear
inside a dream,
I will wait beside you.
I may hear you laughing
from another room.
I may find your voice
inside the walls.
I may discover
your handprint
on the ceiling.
I will place my palm
against it.
And somehow,
I will know
you are close.
When you wake,
I will tell you nothing.
I will simply kiss your forehead
and ask if you slept well.
Because love does not always
need to announce
the things it has seen.
Sometimes it is enough
to stay.
Sometimes it is enough
to recognize someone
even when the world
has changed their face.
And if one day
you forget me,
I will not be angry.
I will sit beside you.
I will tell you our story
until something inside you
begins to remember.
Perhaps your fingers
will find mine first.
Perhaps your heart
will recognize me
before your eyes do.
Perhaps somewhere
inside the darkness
there is a door
only we can open.
And if it opens,
I will go through with you.
Not because I know
what waits there,
but because
you are there.
That is how I will love you.
Not like something
safe from disappearing.
Not like something
I can keep forever.
But like a secret
the universe trusted
only to us.
Like the last warm place
in a house
after winter has taken
every other room.
Like your name
written softly
on the inside of my hand,
where nobody else
can see it.
And if the universe
ever takes everything from us,
the house,
the photographs,
the years,
even the memory
of how we met,
I will search for you
in the smallest things.
A familiar breath.
A trembling hand.
A door left slightly open.
A blue fish
turning slowly
inside a forgotten cup.
And when I find you,
I will not ask
if you remember me.
I will simply take your hand.
You will look at me.
And somewhere behind your eyes,
something ancient
will open.
Then I will smile
and say,
“There you are.”
As if I have been
waiting for you
all my life.
